Why we teach on it
Fluted walls hold their shape. The pleats keep the paper off the brewer wall so water drains through the bed, not around it.
Clean cup. Fine enough to catch the fines that make a brew taste muddy, open enough that it doesn't stall.
No rinse drama. Rinse them anyway to preheat, but there's no papery taste to chase out.
