Burundi’s Muyinga Province is home to JNP Coffee’s newest washing station, established during the 2021 harvest season. Set in a remote area more than six hours from Bujumbura, it currently produces natural coffees and is building a wet mill to expand into fully washed lots. About 2,000 experienced farmers contribute to this station, ensuring careful processing and setting the stage for future experimental methods.
They call this coffee Hafi, meaning “close” in Kirundi. Before the station opened, farmers had to carry their cherries nearly 20 km to the nearest mill—too far for the same-day processing required for quality. Now, a nearby mill makes it possible to produce specialty coffees like this one, with silky, fruit-forward notes of dried cherries and blackberries.
Hafi is grown from the Bourbon variety, the backbone of Burundian coffee. Bourbon thrives at high altitude and is celebrated for its sweetness, red-fruit character, and smooth body, hallmarks of the country’s best lots
