Now led by Rachel Peterson and her daughter Alex, the farm continues to excel—becoming the first producer in history to win all three major Best of Panama categories in 2025 (Gesha Washed, Gesha Natural, and Varietals), achieving the competition’s first triple crown.

Known for their exceptional specialty coffees and deep commitment to supporting their community through housing, education, and medical care, Altieri has earned top-three placements at the Best of Panama in both 2017 and 2024. This year’s lot comes from Dilgo, a farm named in honor of Eugene’s grandson.

4oz Retail: $35
The Janson Family Farm, established in 1941 between the Tisingal and Baru volcanoes, is dedicated to sustainable, high-quality coffee production. Committed to environmental harmony, they nourish their soil with enzyme microorganisms and avoid pesticides and herbicides. Forests act as natural barriers around their plantations, protecting local flora and fauna, while 400 solar panels power the farm. This dedication yields a washed processed Gesha coffee with remarkable complexity, sweetness, and clarity.

Founded in 1967 by Rudolph Peterson, Hacienda La Esmeralda is a family farm in Boquete, Panama, known for its over 50 years of coffee cultivation excellence. The farm benefits from rich volcanic soil and an ideal climate, contributing to the vibrant flavors and exceptional aroma of its coffees.
Guabo 3 BANC was harvested on January 31st, 2025 from the Guabo B location at Hacienda La Esmeralda’s El Velo farm. After picking, the coffee cherries were pre-dried outdoors for 3 days, then fermented for 5 days in a stainless steel anaerobic tank at the cool fermentation room. Drying was then completed in an indoor climate-controlled facility for 3–4 days, with consistent airflow and precise temperature and humidity control.
Now managed by Rachel and Alex Peterson, Hacienda La Esmeralda has won 1st prize at the Best of Panama competition in 2006, 2009, 2010, and 2019 -- and in 2025 became the first producer in history to win all three major categories in the same year (Gesha Washed, Gesha Natural, and Varietals), achieving the competition’s first-ever “triple crown.”
Fun fact: In 2004, the Peterson family made headlines at the Best of Panama competition by highlighting the Gesha varietal, which achieved the highest auction price ever and won first place.
