Founded in 1967 by Rudolph Peterson, Hacienda La Esmeralda is a family farm in Boquete, Panama, known for its over 50 years of coffee cultivation excellence. The farm benefits from rich volcanic soil and an ideal climate, contributing to the vibrant flavors and exceptional aroma of its coffees.
Tumaco 5 NC was harvested on February 11, 2025 from the Tumaco plot at Hacienda La Esmeralda’s Cañas Verdes farm. After picking, the cherries were dried for 46 days on raised beds inside a climate-controlled facility with steady airflow and precise temperature and humidity regulation.
Now managed by Rachel and Alex Peterson, Hacienda La Esmeralda has won 1st prize at the Best of Panama competition in 2006, 2009, 2010, and 2019 -- and in 2025 became the first producer in history to win all three major categories in the same year (Gesha Washed, Gesha Natural, and Varietals), achieving the competition’s first-ever “triple crown.”
Fun fact: In 2004, the Peterson family made headlines at the Best of Panama competition by highlighting the Gesha varietal, which achieved the highest auction price ever and won first place.

Last year’s Dilgo Washed lot sold out quickly. This year we bring you a Dilgo Natural, scoring 91 points.
Altieri Specialty Coffee, founded by Italian American Eugene Altieri after moving to Panama in 1973, transformed two Boquete farms into a renowned family business. Placing in the top 3 at the Best of Panama in 2017 and 2024, they’re known for high-quality specialty coffee, personalized service, and community support, including housing, education, and medical care for workers and their families.
Grown at 1,780 masl on the volcanic slopes of Baru Volcano, this Gesha from the DILGO plot is the first ever planted at Mima Estates, thriving under 70% shade and in rich volcanic soil. Harvested on February 10th, 2025, the cherries were carefully floated to remove imperfections, then sun-dried on African beds for three days before undergoing a unique cold fermentation. A slow, climate-controlled drying period of 35 days at 18°C and 50% humidity preserved the coffee’s elegance, after which the lot was rested to ensure peak flavor and balance.
Fun fact: The lot is named Dilgo, after Founder Eugene Altieri’s grandchild.
